The two Intel Xeon Harpertown processors that lie at the heart of the new Mac Pro are voracious beasts. We created a Zip archive in the Finder from a 2GB folder. We used Unreal Tournament 2004’s Antalus Botmatch average-frames-per-second score we tested at a resolution of 1,024 by 768 pixels at the Maximum setting with both audio and graphics enabled. We converted 45 minutes of AAC audio files to MP3 using iTunes’ High Quality setting. In iMovie, we applied the Aged Film effect from the Video FX. We used Compressor to encode a 6minute:26second DV file using the DVD: Fastest Encode 120 minutes – 4:3 setting. We recorded how long it took to render a scene in Cinema 4D XL.
Photoshop’s memory was set to 70 percent and History was set to Minimum. The Photoshop Suite test is a set of 14 scripted tasks using a 50MB file.

All systems were running Mac OS X 10.5.1 with 2GB of RAM. Adobe Photoshop, Cinema 4D XL, iMovie, iTunes, and Finder scores are in minutes:seconds. If you’re a multimedia pro-videographer, professional photographer, or audio pro-the Mac Pro is the machine you want to use. There is always the change of a busted or broken pin which would kill the logic board (thanks Intel!), rather then the CPU.And one of the base model’s most attractive features is that it’s just that: a great base upon which to build a truly fearsome-fast machine. I don't agree with that socket design, but it is what you will have to deal with when upgrading. There's also the fact of the LGA socket- which is extremely delicate.

There are no DIP switches or jumpers that configure the CPU, so it's all automatically configured by software anyways.
So if the FSB/Voltages are all similar or the same, it should work. I'd say that if the logic board supports it- and EFI does (not that there is any EFI specific code on a CPU), then the only road block is anything in Mac OS X that "looks" for a particular CPU model number (don't know if thermal management has anything to do with this?), which will come back as an unknown CPU. There was an article on the internet where they installed some QC 2.66's in the Mac Pro, and it fired up fine- all 8 cores working.Īs far as I know, the only issue with that (and possibly the particular model Apple uses) is that things like System Profiler reported the CPU as an "Unknown" model (rather then something like "Intel Xeon"), I'm guessing just because Apple is only looking at the model strings for a particular CPU and not the series of the CPU. According to reports it's a special version, not yet widely availableįrom what I hear, the Mac Pro logic board is fairly tolerant for whats installed in the LGA sockets.
